Warmer weather means more road construction and the Missouri Department of Transportation wants drivers to be aware of construction projects.
KSMU's Christy Hendricks reports.
With the spring season comes more road construction.
The Missouri Department of Transportation kicks off Work Zone Awareness Week today.
Ron Plaster is a maintenance crew leader for MoDOT.
He says safety is a big issue in work zones.
Plaster says he had a close call about five years ago when a driver didn't heed caution signs.
Plaster landed with only some bruises, but not all are that lucky.
Twenty people died in work-zone crashes in Missouri last year and over 1000 were injured.
Ron Plaster says drivers need to stay alert and pay attention to the message boards that give instructions to drivers in work zones.
Twenty-seven major construction projects are scheduled for state highways in the Springfield region this year.
