Workers' Compensation Bill Signed Into Law

Missouri's Governor Matt Blunt signed into law today legislation that makes it more difficult for injured workers to get compensation. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

The new law, which takes effect August 28th limits the kinds of worker injuries that qualify for compensation.

Supporters of the new law say it will improve Missouri's economic climate.

Governor Matt Blunt says that's why he signed it.

Supporters say the new law will bring down workers compensation costs, making the state more attractive to businesses.

But others say the new law will hurt workers.

Democratic Representative Clint Zweifel who is the Research and Education Director for Teamsters Local 688.

But Republican lawmakers say the current system favors workers, making it easier for fraudulent claims to win compensation.

Senate President Pro Tem Mike Gibbons says the new law will create balance between competing interests.

Democratic Representative Clint Zweifel says he doesn't mind addressing fraud.

But he says this bill doesn't help workers who have legitimate workers' compensation claims.

The law takes effect August 28th.
