Workers Prepare Historic Walnut Street for 12th Annual Cider Days

Cider Days

Art, scarecrows and of course apple cider will be featured on historic Walnut Street this weekend during the 12th Annual Cider Days arts and crafts festival. KSMU’s Kristian Kriner went down to Walnut Street this morning to check on the preparations.

“I’m standing on the historic Walnut Street where workers are setting up tables and tents for this weekend’s Cider Days. Artists and vendors will arrive at 6 p.m. this evening to set up their displays.”

“Mostly up and down the street we will have artists and crafters,” Sarah Trammell, the community event coordinator for the Urban Districts Alliance, said.

“We have the show wagon stage at National and Walnut, the bandstand stage right here and music at the ends. We have different stages scattered across the festival as well. There are also children’s activities which will be at the west end of the street with the scarecrow village,” Trammell said.

Trammell says the scarecrow competition is always a main attraction.

“We have the scarecrow village down at the west end of the festival where different schools, organizations and non-profits build a scarecrow and they bring that. We vote on Saturday and then the winners are announced on Sunday,” Trammell said.Trammell says over 65 artists come to display their work, which will include jewelry, paintings, glass or photography.

She says all of the arts and crafts have to be handmade.

Trammell says the event is called Cider Days, because apple cider is always associated with fall.“It just has a fall feeling to it. We do serve apple cider,” Trammell said.

She says there will also be at least 25 performances throughout the weekend from several different bands, dancers and comedians from around Springfield.

Cider Days is this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
