The Springfield Art Museum is seeking proposals for exhibition in a new flexible social gallery space that combines exhibitions, retail, and limited beverage service. The Museum encourages submissions from Springfield-based artists working in all media, with particular preference given to two-dimensional work and low-relief sculpture.
Set to open in late October 2017, the gallery portion of this new flex space within the Museum will feature a rotating exhibit titled Art in Our City. Tentatively scheduled for 6 month rotations, Art in Our City will highlight not only local artists, but also the character of Springfield’s unique neighborhoods and will draw out their influence on the artists who inhabit them. Featured artists and neighborhoods will eventually be compiled into a publication, which will in turn be available for purchase in the new retail space.
Museum Director Nick Nelson notes that “Local art and art with local ties is an important part of our collection and exhibitions. This new opportunity creates another intentional layer to those areas, intended to connect people and places through art, and will hopefully serve as a bridge to neighborhoods not traditionally served by the Museum.”
In fact, Nelson says “Recent attendance studies show that 25% of our annual visitors travel over 75 miles to attend the Museum. Art in Our City is a great way to introduce these visitors to the bevvy of talented and creative individuals in our own backyard.” Interested artists can view a detailed “Call For Artists” and apply for consideration of their work at the Museum’s website www.sgfmuseum.org. The deadline is August 1.
