Event Description

The Salvation Army will take applications for its 2017 Back-to-School Assistance Program. Families seeking assistance for the upcoming school year can apply at The Salvation Army’s main office located at 1707 West Chestnut Expressway.

"We hope that the assistance we provide helps level the playing field for these children," Judy Mills, Springfield Corps Officer said. "While we can't supply everything, we can help with the very basics and for some, these basic items are all that they'll have."

Assistance sign-up will take place Monday, July 17 through Friday, July 21 and Monday, July 24 through Friday, July 28. Families can come from 9:30a.m. to 3:30p.m. and should bring with them photo ID, social security cards for everyone in the household, and a current piece of mail. In addition, applications will be taken on Monday, July 17 and Monday, July 24 from 5:00p.m. until 7:00p.m.

Each year, The Salvation Army helps hundreds of local children by providing them with basic school supplies, backpacks, shoes and clothing. This year, they anticipate helping more than 1,100 children.

The Salvation Army is also seeking donations and volunteers to help with the back-to-school program. New or gently used clothing and school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks, binder, crayons and folders can be dropped off anytime at The Salvation Army located at 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway.
