Christian County Master Gardeners Seminar

Event Dates: February 1, 2014 - 1:00pm - 4:00pm

The Christian County Master Gardeners will present a seminar on Invasives in the Landscape and Heirlooms on the Table at the Nixa Community Center, 701 N. Taylor, Nixa.

The seminar will open with Rhonda Rimer, natural history biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, on Invasive "Alien" Species. She will cover common invasive plants in the southwest Missouri landscape, why they are a problem and how to eradicate them.

Rimer's work involves cataloguing and inventorying high-quality natural communities in prairies, woodlands, streams, caves, etc., as well as rare plants and animals. Her work in managing and restoring natural communities includes getting rid of invasive species.

The second speaker will be Mike Nocks with White Harvest Seed Co., Hartville, on Heirloom Vegatables for Your Table. He will compare heirlooms to hybrids and genetically modified organisms, discuss tips on planting and growing heirlooms and explain seed-saving techniques.

Nocks is the owner of White Harvest Seed Co., founded in 2010. He and his family live a self-sustaining lifestyle, raising their own animals and gardens for food, living off the electric grid and using water pumped from an Amish-made windmill.

Registration is required. Information at 417-581-3558.
