"Raisin' Cane: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey" Comes to Hammons Hall

Event Dates: February 4, 2014 - 7:30pm - 9:30pm

Coming to the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts:  Tuesday Feb.4th at 7:30pm Hammons Hall presents "RAISIN' CANE: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey" starring Jasmine Guy and the Avery Sharpe Trio.  The African American community had very few outlets or avenues for its poets, musicians, writers, artists and actors at the start of the 20th century.  As World War I ended this mountain of artistic expression was ready to explode. The words and thoughts of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Zora Neale Hurston, W.E.B. Du Bois and many others, became the voice of the Harlem Renaissance – a new generation of African-Americans, looking forward but still struggling with the past and present. "Raisin’ Cane" is a window on a critical point in American history, celebrating and honoring the legendary voices of the Harlem Renaissance through text, song, music, movement, and imagery.  The production features singer, actress and dancer Jasmine Guy, familiar from the Bill Cosby Show spinoff "A Different World," joined by renowned jazz bassist Avery Sharpe and his Trio, percussionist Kevin Sharpe and jazz violinist John Blake.  For ticket information visit www.hammonshall.com or call 836-7678.
