A ten-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a vehicle near his school. Riddick Tudor was one of five people who were hit by an SUV while standing on a sidewalk on the northeast corner of Grant and Mt. Vernon. Police say the driver, 35-year-old Lonnie Yeager, reportedly experienced a medical episode.
A passenger in the vehicle was able to put the vehicle in park but not until after several people were injured.
Two Campbell Elementary employees were transported to area hospitals and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Three children, including Tudor, were also transported to hospitals. The surviving children are in stable condition.
The driver was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The Springfield Police Department Traffic Section is conducting an investigation and says impairment does not appear to be a factor at this time.
Late Monday, Springfield Public Schools said in a statement that Tudor's death "is devastating for the entire Campbell Elementary community."
A crisis team will to be available at Campbell Tuesday to assist students and staff in coping with their grief. Information for parents about how to talk with their child about loss and support them has been posted to the Campbell Elementary School Facebook page.
The district statement also said "We will make every effort to comfort and support the Campbell family, especially this student's loved ones, as they deal with this tragic loss. Please keep them in your thoughts during this difficult time."
