Building Science: A machinist can make the difference

MSU

Brian Grindstaff has to know something about nearly everything. As the experimental machinist at Missouri State University’s College of Natural and Applied Sciences, he works with engineers, biologists, chemists, physicists...just about anyone.  And each person only brings a job to Brian when the solution to the problem is either unknown or too expensive to implement using standard means.

So that leaves room to tinker, and fabricate items from the initial scribble on a napkin to the final product.  Brian stops by Stem Spots and talks about the general day in his life as well as some specific projects which he has brought to fruition.

Dr. David Cornelison has been working as an educator and scientist in Arizona and Missouri universities for the last 32 years. From 2010-2018, he was the head of the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science at Missouri State University. His research interests lie at the intersection of experimental condensed-matter physics and astrophysics, while his educational efforts have focused on outreach to the K-12 school system. Most of all, he believes in curiosity-driven learning in the sciences and all other fields.
