Filing starts Tuesday, February 27, for the August 7 Primary Election, and County Clerk Shane Schoeller wants to be sure candidates are ready.
During a recent media event, he said one of his goals when he took office was to make it as simple as possible for candidates who want to run for a county office or a party’s central committee to find information they need online.
"We have fillable forms...that you can go through. We have the Candidacy Filing Guide, which they can go through and get information about filing as a candidate," he said. "We also have, depending on the party that you want to run for, your declaration of candidacy form that you will need. We also have links to the local parties."
Positions that will be open in Greene County include presiding commissioner, circuit clerk, county clerk, recorder of deeds, prosecuting attorney, county auditor and collector of revenue.
Forms for candidates can be found under “Candidate Corner” on the county clerk’s website.
On the first day of filing, the order on the ballot will be determined by a random drawing. After the first day, candidates will be added in the order they file.
Candidates running for office can get help and advice from their local parties. Skyler Johnston, executive director of the Greene County Democratic Party, said they work to make sure candidates are ready to run.
"We want to be sure our candidates know how to run a field program, how to effectively message, how to reach out to the press effectively," he said. "We want to arm our candidates with as much information and tools going forward so that they can be successful."
Danette Procter, chair of the Greene County Republican Central Committee, said they've been talking to potential candidates for Greene County presiding commissioner, some for more than a year, but she declined to name names. She offered her personal phone number--(417) 742-3500)--for potential candidates to call.
"I like to sit down with candidates," she said. "We have a great sheet, a helpmate, how to get you plugged into the party. We refer you to great resources such as Shane (Schoeller), and our secretary of state's office also has great resources."
