Debbie Good talks with Allison Pilley, director of curriculum, instruction and assessment for  Springfield Public Schools, about Common Core Standards.

According to Pilley, the Common  Core Standards were developed through a collaboration of U.S. governors and with the chiefs of schools.  The goal was to set high academic standards for students in English/language arts and in mathematics, she said.

According to Pilley, when Common Core was adopted in Missouri in 2010, the state's districts had to make sure their local standards aligned with Common Core.

The 2014-2015 school year was the first year with a different standardized test aligned with Common Core, she said.  Third through 12th graders took assessments online for the first time.

Results aren't in yet, but Pilley predicts scores will be lower due to "increased rigor."
