Lisa Langley talks with Dr. Brian Calfano, MSU political science professor and policy advisor for the city of Los Angeles Human Relations Commission, about his work in LA.
Dr. Calfano's work is based, in part, on the LA Riots (Watts Riots) in August, 1965. The riots were rooted in the discrimination of minorities who were unable to find affordable housing. They began when an African-American man was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, and rumors spread about police brutality, according to Calfano.
He discusses the similarities between the Watts Riots, the Rodney King Riots and the situation in Ferguson, MO.
