In this segment of Making Democracy Work, Lois Zerrer talks with Greene County Circuit Court Judge Tom Mountjoy about the court and judicial system.

Circuit judges and associate circuit judges are basic trail judges in the state of Missouri, according to Mountjoy.  Circuit courts deal with issues of fact, he said, and rule on the law that's applicable to the type of case under review.

People often are allowed to appeal the decision made by the circuit court, he said.  Those cases go to an appellate level court, which could be the court of appeals or it might be the Missouri Supreme Court.  Those courts look solely at issues of law, according to Mountjoy.
