Children between the ages of 3 and 15 have the opportunity to get their hands dirty by learning how to bait their own hooks and clean their own fish for free on Saturday June 2nd at Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park.

According to the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, parents must register their children for the event before May 31st at 5 p.m. They can do so online at ParkBoard.org or by calling 864-1332.

Children can be registered for an 8 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or 11:45 a.m. timeslot.

Participants must bring their own rod and reel, bait and stringer for the fish.

The Missouri Department of Conservation will have staff on site to show kids how to properly bait their hooks and use their rod and reels.

Jenny Fillmer Edwards, a spokeswoman for the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, said this is the event’s 37th year.

“Kids who may not have gone fishing before or maybe have limited experience with fishing, this is an event for them,” says Edwards.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is stocking the farm’s pond with Channel Catfish and Bluegill. Kids will be allowed to keep three of their catches from the day and Conservation staff will assist them in cleaning one of the fish.

Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park is located at 3825 West Farm Road 146 in Springfield.
