Update: 10:10 a.m. The cooling center at the Salvation Army in Springfield has opened its doors to offer a safe place for citizens to get out of the heat.

The facility at 1707 West Chestnut Expressway will remain open until 7 o’clock this evening.

“We want everyone to have a safe place to get out of the heat and find relief,” said Major Mike Mills, Corps Officer.

In addition, the Salvation Army is in need of fans to distribute to those in need in the community. Area residents are encouraged to call the office at (417)862-5509 to check on the availability of fans. Those wishing to donate fans can bring them to West Chestnut Expressway location.

Original story:

The heat index is expected to reach triple digits today.  Temperatures will be in the low 90s, but the National Weather Service says the heat index will be around 102.  It’s issued a heat advisory through this evening for Springfield and areas to the west and north.

A heat advisory is issued when hot temperatures and high humidity combine to create a situation when heat illness is possible.

The National Weather Service says you should take extra precautions in the heat.  If you work or spend time outside reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or late evening if possible.  Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.

Take frequent rest breaks in shaded areas or in air conditioning.  You should also check on elderly neighbors and relatives.

According to the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, heat stroke is considered a medical emergency.  Symptoms include an altered mental state, throbbing headache, confusion, nausea, dizziness, a high body temperature and rapid and strong pulse.  Skin may be hot and dry or a patient may be sweating.

During heat advisories, various cooling centers offer relief for those who don’t have a place to go to get out of the heat.  For a list of cooling stations across Missouri, click here.

Springfield Public Pools are also a good place to cool off.  For hours and locations, parkboard.org.
