Library Source for More Than Just Books

Springfield-Greene County Library District

The Springfield-Greene County Library District is a wealth of information beyond the books and DVD's on the shelves.  In this segment of KSMU's Making Democracy Work Series, Leslie Carrier talks with Kathleen O'Dell, community relations director for district, about services and resources available at the libraries that deal directly with citizen issues and government-related services.

Did you know that you can apply for a passport at the Library Center?  The Library Center is now a passport acceptance center and has been extremely busy fulfilling passport requests for those wanting to venture outside the U.S.  Or did you know that you can register to vote at the Library?  Staff at each branch have been trained as Deputy Registrars, which allows them to register voters or submit any changes to a person’s voter registration.

In addition, several items in the library collection focus on government information, publications and data bases.  Are you looking for tax information? Are you interested in finding out voter statistics?  Do you need information on how to start a business?  What about finding grant opportunities to help fund non-profit organizations?  All this, and more, can be found through a search of a database or a simple request of a reference librarian.

For a person seeking job or career information, the Library is a one-stop shop, providing information on writing resumes, sharpening up job skills, how to better your interview skills and trends for careers in the future.  The EDGE Community Technology Center, located in the lower level of the Midtown Carnegie Library, offers free computer training and personal and professional development tutorials and instructional programs.
