Governor Jay Nixon has ordered that the U.S. and Missouri flags at all state government buildings be flown at half-staff Saturday.  That’s in honor of U.S. Army Cpl. Donald Matney of Seymour who was killed during the Korean War.  After being listed as Missing in Action for more than 65 years, Matney’s remains were recently positively identified.  His funeral is scheduled for Saturday in Seymour.

Also under Nixon’s order, U.S. and Missouri flags in Webster County will fly at half-staff November 20-25.

According to the governor’s office, the 18-year-old Matney was assigned to Company H, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division.  He was killed in action during the early days of the war on July 20, 1950 during an attempt to delay the enemy from capturing a town near Taejon, South Korea.  He was listed as Missing in Action until this year when his remains were identified and returned to Missouri.

Governor Nixon said, “the passage of years does not diminish the honor we pay to Cpl. Matney for his sacrifice.”
