Park Central Square Sculpture Gets New Look Tuesday

ozarksliving.com

The modern art sculpture that’s been on Park Central Square since 1971 will get a new look this morning.  And it won’t require anything but some heavy labor.

A Springfield Public Works crew will rotate the piece, called the Tumbler, at 7:30 this morning for the spring season.

According to the City of Springfield, former assistant public works director, Jonathan Gano, learned the Tumbler’s origins and its name while doing research on Park Central Square a few years ago.  He tracked down the sculptor, Aris Demetrios and chatted with him over the phone from his home in California.

Gano learned that the name of the piece came from the fact that it was supposed to be re-oriented every season, so that there’s a new piece of art each time.

The Tumbler was funded by an arts patron, Mrs. Monroe Swyers, who reportedly donated $15,000, according to the City of Springfield.  Demetrios said that barely covered the cost of steel to make it.

The public is invited to watch the Tumbler being rotated at 7:30 this morning—be sure to wear green!
