Many Missouri State University students expecting to move into renovated Sunvilla Tower this fall will have to wait until at least mid-September.
Students were scheduled to move into the 19-story structure this August, but that will only happen for those living on the building’s top nine floors. Construction crews are behind schedule on floors 3-9.
Students on the lower floors are being offered accommodations at University Plaza Hotel and Holiday Inn express free of charge, according to the school.
Students will also be provided with free campus meal plans and transportation until they are able to move into Sunvilla.
Repeated attempts to obtain comment from Residence Life officials were unsuccessful.
New sprinkler systems allowing for fully furnished kitchens, renovated plumbing and ventilation, and completely remodeled restroom facilities make up the $13 million renovation project.
Stoves were removed from the structure in 2011, after a lack of fire suppression systems made them a concern for student safety. Installing these systems was a primary goal for this renovation, and has allowed for the reinstallation of cooking facilities into the apartments.
Built in 1963, MSU bought Sunvilla in the mid-1970s. When it completely opens this fall the renovated building will be able to house 237 students in a co-ed environment that will remain open during all university breaks. Residence does not require a meal plan.
