Shoring up the Numbers in Math, the Sciences and Engineering

Dr. Matt Pierson
Missouri State University

Dr. Matt Pierson is an assistant professor of Civil Engineering at Missouri State University.

Besides building things, he is passionate about educational opportunities for students. In that vein, he has submitted funding proposals to the National Science Foundation on several occasions and recently was awarded a substantial grant from the S-STEM initiative.

This grant will enable Pierson and his team to fund a scholarship-based retention enhancement program, designed to assist students in Computer Science, Math, Engineering and Physics.

Listen in as Pierson explains the motivations, goals and methodologies designed to keep students in the pipeline.

Dr. David Cornelison has been working as an educator and scientist in Arizona and Missouri universities for the last 32 years. From 2010-2018, he was the head of the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science at Missouri State University. His research interests lie at the intersection of experimental condensed-matter physics and astrophysics, while his educational efforts have focused on outreach to the K-12 school system. Most of all, he believes in curiosity-driven learning in the sciences and all other fields.
