A city-wide sidewalk assessment and inventory is underway in Springfield. It’s being conducted by Tempe, Arizona-based IMS Infrastructure Management Services LLC. They’re using a specialized sidewalk surface tester, which looks similar to an all-terrain vehicle—to collect a detailed inventory and condition rating of all sidewalks in Springfield.
According to the city, an IMS field technician will travel at low speeds along sidewalks, occasionally stopping to take photographs or record additional data, during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.
The $139,000 project is funded through the quarter-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax and the 1/8-cent Transportation Sales Tax.
The city manages around 700 miles of sidewalk and 10,000 curb ramps all must be ADA compliant. Data from this assessment will be used to update Springfield’s Transition Plan with priorities, costs and timelines to address non-compliant infrastructure.
The assessment is scheduled to be completed next March.
