Local high school and college students plan to walk out of class this morning to advocate for what they’re calling “common sense” gun laws.
SGF Walkout For Our Lives is part of a nationwide Walkout held last week.
In Springfield, Glendale, Kickapoo and Central High School students are planning to participate as well as students at Drury and Missouri State Universities.
Hannah Brashers, one of the local organizers, hopes it will be a bipartisan effort.
"We don't care if you're a Democrat. We don't care if you're a Republican. We don't care if you're a Libertarian," she said. "Together, we're advocating for common sense gun legislation, and we all have different ideas of what that means."
She said, as a group, they’ve decided that should include increased background checks, decreased access to AR-15’s and no guns in schools.
According to Brashers, they want to “create a lot of attention on the issue,” and they won’t stop after today’s walkout.
"We're all really fired up, and we're really prepared to be in this fight for the long run," she said.
Springfield Public Schools Superintendent Dr. John Jungmann told the Springfield News-Leader that students who participate in the SGF Walkout won’t be punished for doing so.
