Beginning today, MSU students can vote on proposed changes to the Taylor Health and Wellness Center. It calls for deconstructing the existing building and creating a new one – approximately twice the size – in its place.
The measure appears on the 2015 homecoming ballot, which students can findhere. Voting is open until October 16th. If the measure passes, construction on the new facility will begin in mid to late fall of 2016.
Students had previously expressed interest in an updated health building during a 2014-15 study conducted by Student Affairs. The current facility runs at 97% occupancy daily; not including the rise in visits during cold and flu season. The new building’s size would help accommodate current students and the increasing MSU enrollment. The new center would also add new services to its repertoire including: a counseling center, sports medicine clinic, drive-thru pharmacy, and a consultant space for concerns such as diabetes or gynecology.
If the construction is approved, payment for the new Health and Wellness facility will come from fees amounting to about $29 per semester, which would go into effect during the fall of 2017; the estimated completion date for the facility.
Students would still be able to receive health care on campus during construction, with services temporarily being moved to another location.
