Mike Kromrey, Executive Director of the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks (WCO), talks with Leslie Carrier about the mission of the organization.
The Watershed Committee's mission is to sustain and improve the water resources of Springfield and Greene County through education and effective management of the region’s watersheds.
The WCO also receives grants to work on specific projects, such as monitoring the quality of the watershed that supplies Springfield’s drinking water, improving storm water drainage, rainwater harvesting, vegetative filters, streetscape projects, and riparian restoration.
In addition, the WCO provides education programs on maintaining a quality septic system, well monitoring and testing, preventing soil erosion and improving aquatic life. Much of this is done in partnership with other environmental non-profits or governmental agencies in the region, along with working directly with landowners.
The WCO is funded by a partnership between Greene County, City of Springfield, and City Utilities.
