Webster County Receives Positive Audit Report

Webster County

A recent audit found improvements in government operations in Webster County after a former assistant county clerk there pleaded guilty to stealing money.

Last November, Billy Breitenstein pleaded guilty to using a county-issued credit card to make more than $17,600 in personal purchases over several years.  He was ordered to repay the money and serve five years of probation.

According to state auditor, Nicole Galloway, after a previous audit described the factors that allowed the fraudulent activity to continue undiscovered for years, Webster county officials committed to implementing safeguards to protect taxpayer money.

The report this week makes recommendations for improvements in the county collector’s office where Galloway says miscalculations resulted in incorrect amounts being withheld from tax collections.  It also found more could be done to protect sensitive data maintained by county offices and recommended increasing checks and balances over certain accounting duties.
