In this segment of Weekend Edition, Michele Skalicky talks with Jackie Barger, executive director of the Children's Smile Center of the Ozarks, about the annual Sertoma Chili Cook-Off.

The City of Springfield is hosting a rally in support of injured police officer, Aaron Pearson, tonight (2/27) at 6:30 at Park Central Square.  It will include a welcome by Springfield’s mayor, a prayer and short service, contemporary Christian music and a short speech by Officer Pearson’s father-in-law.  The event is a kick-off to the Playin’ and Prayin’ for 1641 benefit concert at the Gillioz Theatre at 8 pm.  Tickets are $20 for the concert, and all proceeds will go to Officer Pearson and his family.  For ticket information, click here.

The Lawn and Garden Show is today and tomorrow (2/27-2/28) from 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday (3/1) 11 to 5.  Admission is $5, and kids six and under get in free.  The event will feature lots of exhibits and seminars.  This year’s event will feature a butterfly house with more than 1000 native species.  To learn more, ozarkempirefair.com

Smithsonian Gardens

The Gardens of America Series continues tonight (2/27) at 6 at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center.  The topic is “Washington D.C.:  the U.S. Botanic Garden and the Smithsonian Garden.  Admission is free.

The Sertoma Chili Cook-Off to benefit four local charities is this weekend at the Springfield Expo Center.  Tonight’s (2/27) events will include a Texas Hold’em Tournament.  Tomorrow (2/28) will feature the Chili Cook-Off and a casino area.  For ticket information, click here.

Fiddler’s Green, a play about the Buffalo Soldiers, a black regiment during the Civil War, will be presented tomorrow afternoon (2/28) at 4:30 at the Northview Center at Doling Park.  Join the soldiers for campfire talks where they’ll provide insight into their lives.  Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.  Kids five and under get in free. Phil Dixon, co-founder of the Negro League Baseball Museum in Kansas City, will be at the Library Center tomorrow morning (2/28) from 10 to noon to talk about the Monarchs team that won the first Negro League World Series championship in 1924.  He’ll also present the history of African American ball players in the Negro Leagues through stories, baseball poetry and photographs.

Ida B. Wells

The film, “Ida B. Wells,” will be shown tomorrow and Sunday (2/28-3/1) at 1 at George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, MO.  The film tells the story of a woman who fought against lynching in the South and worked as a teacher, journalist and civil rights activist.  For details, click here.
