As temperatures continue to drop, space heater fires are on the rise across the Ozarks. The Springfield Fire Department responded to three of these fires just last week. KSMU’s Melanie Foehrweiser has details on how these fires can be prevented.

With beautiful weather expected this weekend, The Springfield Conservation Center would like to invite nature enthusiasts and bird watchers to Eagle Days. This comes after an Army Corps of Engineers survey revealed Table Rock Lake is home to over 200 bald eagles nests. KSMU’s Shannon Bowers has more.

Missouri State University has reported an energy savings of 47,000 dollars over their 12 day winter break. KSMU’s Samuel Crowe reports.

One organization in the Ozarks is dedicated to providing access to locally produced food, local artisan crafts, and especially to keeping the local dollar-- local. KSMU’s Shane Franklin went out over the weekend to spend some time with this organization, and has this story.

Field Drought

The National Weather Service announced today that 2012 was the warmest year on record for Joplin, and second warmest in Springfield. As KSMU’s Samuel Crowe reports, that trend might continue into the New Year.

Waste Diversion

A Missouri Senate bill pre-filed by State Senator Kurt Schaefer would eliminate the state’s 20 Solid Waste Management Districts, instead directing the money from landfill fees to the state’s Department of Natural Resources. MSU Snowfall

1.2 inches of snow fell last night locally, and according to the National Weather Service in Springfield, that is almost a third of the snowfall for the whole year. KSMU’s Shannon Bowers reports on 2012’s snow accumulation.
