KSMU is partnering with the Springfield-Greene County Library to bring you readings from letters and journals written during the Civil War each Thursday morning at 7:30 through April 28th. It’s part of the library’s 2011 Big Read Celebration, “Voices of Conflict: the American Civil War.” Here’s Leah Hamilton Jenkins reading an excerpt from the Elizabeth Hunter and Priscilla Hunter letters to Margaret Hunter Newberry.

Today's feature includes excerpts from an interview with Dean Bruton. The interview was conducted by Kim Flores.Bruton remembers growing up during and after the Great Depression. He also recalls an influential teacher who made an impact on his life.

This segment features excerpts from an interview with Virginia Gleason, conducted by Steva Carter. Virginia talks about the difficulties she faced as a working woman in the 1950’s and how she ended up with a long and happy tenure as a librarian in Springfield.

We’re going to hear excerpts from an interview with 92-year-old Frank King. This interview was conducted by Jim Wood. Frank, who was born in 1917 begins by talking about what he remembers about growing up in Ash Grove, Missouri. He also shares what it was like to see a "talkie" for the first time. He recalls how the Great Depression impacted his neighbors and family.

We have excerpts from an interview with Dorothy Boillot Miller, conducted by Marilyn Prosser. Dorothy begins by talking about her family’s struggles during the Great Depression. She goes on to talk about moving to different schools and spending quality time with her grandparents.

We’re going to hear excerpts from an interview with Dorthy Frazier conducted by Charity Huechteman. Dorthy Frazier was born in a log cabin between Mansfield and Hartville. She begins by talking about what it was like to be a child, growing up during the Great Depression. She also discusses what it was like going to school when she was a young girl and how her family celebrated holidays.
