As Missouri State University’s emergency preparedness manager, David Hall’s responsibilities include planning for and coordinating during crisis situations on the Springfield campus. He also conducts training throughout the university system.

Hall, the city of Springfield’s former fire chief, has been on the job at MSU since February 1. For starters, he says it’s important to establish a good basis of understanding about the campus.

After years of evaluation the Springfield Fire Department may soon come to a decision how to better service the city.  Resources have been moved to high demand areas of the city before but Fire Chief David Hall believes other options should be explored.

“We’ve pretty much made all the moves that we could do to maximize our usage without either closing a fire station or relocating those resources to other areas of the city or by having additional staffing or equipment,” said Hall.

Springfield’s Fire Chief is stepping down to become Missouri State University’s first emergency preparedness manager.

MSU announced the hire Thursday. In a statement, David Hall said the position seemed like a natural progression for him personally and professionally.

Hall has worked for the Springfield Fire Department for 27 years, and as fire chief since 2009.

The Springfield Fire Department is beefing up its fire prevention and safety education efforts to the tune of $27,000.

On Tuesday it officially accepted the grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It requires a five percent match from the department. Officials will use the money to expand existing fire safety efforts, including purchasing 1,000 smoke alarms, 250 fire extinguishers, 50 escape ladders and a part-time program coordinator.

The Springfield Fire Department responded to nearly 16,000 calls for service in 2015, with just over half of those medical emergencies.

The numbers were released Tuesday in the department’s annual report.
