Students at Missouri State University West Plains who suffered losses during recent flooding may be eligible for financial help through the MSU system’s Emergency Scholarship Fund.

“Our Springfield colleagues reached out to us and said that they wanted to make sure that we understood that the West Plains students were eligible for this scholarship,” said Dr. Drew Bennett, chancellor of the West Plains campus.

Students attending Missouri State University on both the Springfield and West Plains’ campuses will pay more in tuition beginning this fall.

The MSU Board of Governors formally approved the changes on Wednesday. It comes as the Missouri legislature is expected to approve a 9 percent reduction in appropriations for the state’s colleges and universities, as recommended by the governor, due to a state revenue shortfall.

Missouri State University-West Plains Chancellor Drew Bennett says withholds to the school’s current budget and reductions to the upcoming fiscal year are its largest in over a decade.

Bennett made the comments during a press conference Tuesday, where he said his campus is facing an immediate hold back of over $418,000 and an ongoing cut of $468,000.

The Missouri State University Board of Governors has approved a resolution that gives the West Plains campus management over the city’s Shoe Factory Lofts.

With the agreement, the name of the facility will change to Grizzly Lofts, university officials said.
