With the Memorial Day weekend comes more outdoor activities, including on area lakes and rivers. But officials advise you know the conditions of those waterways before getting in.

Over the summer months, the Springfield-Greene County Health Department and the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks test local waterways for disease causing pathogens. These results are then posted online.

The weekend drowning of an Ohio man along the James River is the fourth fatality  of its kind in southwest Missouri this year, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop D.

What can the public do to enjoy Missouri waterways this summer safely and securely? Diana Newman, owner of Hootontown Canoe Rental, suggests, among other things, never going alone.

“You shouldn’t really ever go by yourself, just in case, especially if the water is not at a normal level," said Newman

A major cleanup will be held on the James River this weekend. Michele Skalicky reports.


The James River offers a variety of recreational opportunities, from floating to fishing to just relaxing and letting the kids catch crawdads.


But hidden beneath the James' waters lies trash, left behind by the few irresponsible people who use the river and dumped by those who don't.
