Refugees of Congolese War Navigate Life After Trauma

In the crowded lobby of Life 360 Church in Springfield, Esther Faida, a 28-year-old Congolese refugee, is keeping an eye on her young daughter.

Esther’s journey to the Ozarks started in a war zone. 

A former seamstress, she lived and worked in the capital city of South Kivu, where the conflict between ethnic and rebel groups has forced entire communities from their homes.

Esther, her husband and two small children had been living in war zone since 1998. Bloodshed, fear and instability became routine.

Jobs for Life Seeks Champions to Assist Others

A program aimed at helping people who are struggling to achieve success in their lives is well underway.

The Life360 Fairbanks program, Jobs for Life, has reached the half way point of its first round, and there is still a need for “champions” interested in assisting current and future students.

The long contested sale of a Springfield church to Walmart to construct a Neighborhood Market is expected to move forward. This after the Missouri Supreme Court chose not to review an appeals court ruling that blocks a public vote on the rezoning for the store.

A citizens group opposed to a new Walmart in Springfield is vowing to continue its fight after a judge has ruled that a referendum petition to overturn the city’s zoning decision allowing for the market cannot be used. KSMU’s Scott Harvey has details.
