President Smart: A Good Legislative Year for MSU

It’s the first time in five years that the Missouri General Assembly has increased funding appropriations for Missouri State University. As KSMU’s Scott Harvey reports, the additional $25 million lawmakers set aside for higher education, which still awaits the signature of Gov. Nixon, means an additional $2.4 million for MSU.

After Rallying Support for First Steps, Nixon Vetoes SB 350

Before dozens of parents and their children in Springfield Tuesday, Gov. Jay Nixon worked to apply more pressure on lawmakers into funding the First Steps program in what he calls “a responsible way.” As KSMU’s Scott Harvey reports, the Governor told the crowd he planned to veto the alternative funding plan, which he followed through with upon returning to the Capitol.

Nixon: Education Funding Best Economic Development Tool for State

Gov. Jay Nixon Wednesday reiterated his proposal for $34 million in additional funding for higher education during a stop in Springfield. KSMU’s Scott Harvey reports.

The Governor first made the announcement for the performance-based model during last week’s State of the State Address.

Wednesday morning, he congratulated MSU for achieving all five of its performance criteria, which makes the school eligible for an additional $4.3 percent in funding, or $3.3 million.

Nixon Unveils Health, Education-Heavy Agenda

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon used his State of the State address Monday night to reiterate proposals made during recent stops across the state, including Medicaid expansion, but also endorsed a bond issuance, and made an ardent call for ethics reform.

More than $164 million of the Democratic Governor’s proposed budget for 2014 will need legislative approval, no guarantee with a Republican-controlled legislature, which holds a veto proof majority.

On the third stop of a three city tour Thursday, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon reiterated his support for expanding Medicaid, indicating his budget plan for Fiscal Year 2014 will include federal funding that will provide health care for uninsured Missourians; an estimated 300,000 men, women and children. KSMU’s Scott Harvey was at the Springfield event and has this report.
