Springfield Contemporary Theatre opens 2017 with the Olivier-winning drama Blackbird by David Harrower.  Directing the production, and making his SCT debut, is Albert Pertalion, who retired to the Nixa area two years ago after running a performing arts center at Georgia Southern University  Albert had already directed West Side Story at Springfield Little Theatre, and wanted to work with SCT.  Asked by Lou Schaffer and Rick Dines what he might want to direct, Albert immediately said "Blackbird!

"It's very exciting--and hilarious.  Hopefully. When we get an audience in there we will see!" laughs Equity actor Nathan Shelton. "It's hilarious without an audience," Rick Dines assures him. Dines is Springfield Contemporary Theatre's Managing Artistic Director, and he is directing Nathan in the third part of the 2016 SCT Solo Play Festival at Center Stage in Wilhoit Plaza: Joe Mantello's stage adaptation of the humorous essay by David Sedaris, The Santaland Diaries.

Springfield Contemporary Theatre's SCT Center Stage in Wilhoit Plaza will present the drama "The Mountaintop" by Katori Hall, directed by Rick Dines, October 14-30.  This Olivier Award-winning drama about leadership, legacy, mortality and the man behind the myth is set on April 3, 1968, when an exhausted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. retires to his room, #306, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis after delivering the prophetic ‘Mountaintop’ speech at the Mason Temple during the sanitation workers’ strike.  Director Rick Dines calls Hall’s play “a historical fiction of sorts...

Who but Stephen Sondheim would conceive of a Broadway musical introducing the audience to nine of the most famous presidential assassins and would-be assassins in American history?  Sondheim’s musical Assassins opens a three-week run at Springfield Contemporary Theatre’s SCT Center Stage in Wilhoit Plaza (corner of Jefferson and Pershing downtown) September 16-October 9.  Directing the production is Gretchen Teague, with musical direction by Alex Huff, conducting what Rick Dines of SCT describes as “the largest orchestra we’ve had since the last Sondheim we did, Sweeney Todd.”
