Volunteers from a variety of businesses and organizations fanned across Springfield and other area communities today to help out nonprofit agencies.  The United Way Day of Caring had more than 2000 people helping out.

Isabel’s House Crisis Nursery had volunteers from KY-3 and American National working on projects.  They organized a bike storage shed and worked on the playground in the backyard—installing a giant abacus for learning math and a permanent hopscotch play area.

Volunteers are needed for United Way Day of Caring projects next month.  The event is set for August 18th.  It’s a day when thousands of volunteers from hundreds of local businesses complete a variety of projects for local non-profit agencies.

According to the United Way, this volunteer effort allows the participating agencies to keep funds in their programs and provides volunteers a chance to connect with “the critical work being done.”

Springfield volunteers were scattered throughout the city today for the 22nd Annual United Way Day of Caring. As KSMU’s Briana Simmons reports, Washington Park was among the sites to receive some tender, love, and care.

A nice breeze accompanied the volunteers of Cox College at Washington Park Thursday morning. Olujimi “Jimi” Sode is the site coordinator. He says about 60 volunteers joined the efforts to revamp one of the city’s oldest parks.

CoxHealth employees were hard at work today, but they weren’t at the hospital.  They were donating their time and efforts to help spruce up a local elementary school as part of the United Way’s Day of Caring.  KSMU’s Michele Skalicky has more.

York students have wanted a ball field for years.  And today they got it.  CoxHealth volunteers built a baseball diamond behind the school on W. Nichols during the United Way Day of Caring.  Lisa Alexander was busy shoveling gravel this morning but took a break to talk about the volunteer effort.
