Numbers that Add Up: Using Math as a Tool to Describe Reality

KSMU Archives
Dr. Jorge Rebaza

Dr. Jorge Rebaza is a Professor of Mathematics at Missouri State University.

His specialty is applied mathematics; that is the application of theoretical mathematical tools to real-world problems confronting society. These types of problems range from the time evolution of disease spread to the analysis of word recognition in psychological research. The only requirement is the ability to represent the problem with numbers in some way.

Jorge stops by to discuss his own research, the approach needed to attack a problem and the education programs the math department have set up to assist in the development of new mathematical minds.

Dr. David Cornelison has been working as an educator and scientist in Arizona and Missouri universities for the last 32 years. From 2010-2018, he was the head of the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science at Missouri State University. His research interests lie at the intersection of experimental condensed-matter physics and astrophysics, while his educational efforts have focused on outreach to the K-12 school system. Most of all, he believes in curiosity-driven learning in the sciences and all other fields.
