A new program in Springfield seeks to lower the number of house fires in high risk areas. According to the city’s fire department, the number of deaths from fire in Springfield is among the highest in the United States.

“We know that one fire death is too many, five is way too many especially for a community our size we need to do a better job reducing those numbers,” said Cara Erwin, spokesperson for the Springfield Fire Department.

Springfield Community Gardens continues to expand with plans for a new plot in the city’s Zone 1 region. These gardens help bring the community together while producing food for local entities.

Alexa Poindexter, who manages the Market Garden, takes me through the rows of vegetables that it currently has to offer. The garden is one of nearly two dozen that Springfield Community Gardens has throughout Springfield. She says these plots often serve as points of contact with passersby.

Springfield’s Zone 1 candidates shared their vision for the city’s north side Thursday while offering opinions ranging from repercussions for the police chief to the future of the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge. 

Incumbent Phyllis Ferguson and challenger Thomas Quinn took questions for an hour Thursday before some 50 attendees at the Library Station. The forum was arranged by the Springfield News-Leader, which began the event with a series of questions before lending way to citizen queries.

Among the dozens of local offices and organizations who have partnered with the City of Springfield’s Zone Blitz Initiative are arts organizations—the Springfield Art Museum; Springfield Ballet; and the Springfield Regional Arts Council.

The City of Springfield’s Zone Blitz initiative is all about neighbors helping lift neighbors out of poverty in northwest Springfield by addressing the challenges they face and creating opportunities. According to Jody Glazner, the “Give Back” Director at Springfield’s North Point Church, the ideals embodied in the Zone One Blitz are right in their wheelhouse.
